Alan Freeman

Several years ago it seemed that blacksmithing was concerned only with reproducing traditional designs. Now it has become a creative craft offering an opportunity for artistic expression. As with ceramics, there is a sense of magic in using fire to turn raw materials of little beauty into objects which are useful and attractive.

Alan Freeman is a blacksmith who has good practical ideas and fine craftsmanship skills. He specialises in the design, fabrication and installation of architectural metal work in mild steel, stainless steel, wrought iron and brass. His projects include staircases, balustrades, railings & balconies, and also the heritage restoration of windows, gates and ironmongery.

One of Alan’s projects is a footbridge over a weir, part of the towpath along the river Stort, beside Parndon Mill. This was created as a collaboration between Parndon Mill artists, Alan’s metalwork embellished by cast glass inserts by Karen Murphy.

Alan welcomes special commissions from artists and designers and enjoys working on decorative & sculptural projects.
