Portrait drawing and painting with Jon Farningham
Course Details:
6-week course in drawing and painting the portrait. You will create a range of drawn and painted portraits, working from a life model. Expert artist and tutor, Jonathan Farningham, will provide advice and guidance in using pencil, charcoal and oil paints. This course is suitable for all levels; those new to portraiture and those with more experience will find the right amount of guidance to achieve excellent portraits.

Course Breakdown:
Week 1: Charcoal Portraits
In the first week, you will use charcoal on paper and learn how to use simplified shadow shapes to inform proportions and tone.
Week 2: Monochrome Oil Portraits
In the second week, you will expand your use of shadow and tone in the medium of oil, creating monochrome oil portraits.
Week 3: Pencil Portraits
In week three, you will discover the use of edges, alignment and plumb lines to create effective proportion. You will work in a range of dry media.
Week 4: Colour Mixing
In week four, you will learn how to mix any colour from a simple set of primaries. You will then practise painting small objects, paying keen attention to tone and colour.
Week 5: Colour Portraits
In week five, you will create an oil portrait on canvas with a range of colours. You will consolidate your understanding of tone, alignment and colour mixing.
Week 6: Hone Your Portrait Skills
In week six, you will create one oil portrait on canvas, putting into practice all the skills you have gained throughout the course.
